Guidance and Counseling

Guidance / Counseling

The Guidance and Counseling Staff at Wilson High School provides developmental, as well as pro-active, preventative and remedial services for students. This involves a cooperative effort among students, staff members, parents and the community. Their purpose is to empower all learners to lead satisfying and productive lives by assisting them in identifying and achieving educational, career, personal and social goals. We are here to help by working with academic issues, educational and career planning, as well as personal concerns. All students meet several times each year with their counselor in groups of approximately 30 for group guidance activities. Most students will also have individual meetings with counselors.

The Role of the School Counselor

  • School counselors are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests and talents as these traits relate to career awareness and development.

  • School counselors help parents focus on ways to further the education, personal and social growth of students.

  • School counselors work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves.

  • School counselors seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and compliment comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society.

  • Comprehensive school counseling programs are considered an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school.

Do we make a difference? Absolutely!

Vision - Beauty - Talent

Vision

English Language Arts encourages students to find their “voices” as they collaborate with world literature and complex texts. The study of English further develops their communication skills and cultural expression.  Students reflect rigorous critical-thinking at all levels of literacy from English Learners to students with special needs and to IB “Diploma Programme” participants.

Mission

Our mission is to provide a quality arts and educational experience that is creative and challenging to all students who have an interest or passion for the arts.  The integration of an education which supports the A-G requirements for college admission and a visual and performing arts theme will provide opportunities to increase student engagement and participation, promote the arts as an essential part of life by making connections to student life experiences and global issues, to promote visual and artistic literacy and create a lifelong passion for the arts.

What Distinguishes the Foreign Language Department?

Always getting those prepositional phrases mixed up with regular and irregular verbs?  Teachers slave for hours on end helping students understand the many languages offered here at WHS.  Whether it be tutoring a senior to prepare for SATs or helping students cram last minute for the AP Spanish test, teachers could be found before and after school helping those in need.  Although English is one of the most important and difficult classes that students need, ESL was also a hardship.  Many students struggle trying to learn English as a second language.  Students were required to learn basic English skills after years of speaking only one language.  To many college bound students foreign language isn't just an elective, its a requirement.  Students take up to four years of any foreign language offered here in hopes that they will be prepared for college.  To do so, we provide:

*Fall & Spring Drama Performances

*Drama and Music Productions

*Showcase student work in galleries

*Painting, ceramics, drama courses

*Active alumni support

*Winter & Spring Concerts

*Winter & Spring Talent Shows

*End of Year Senior Awards Luncheon
