Nutrition for a Healthier Life

The warm, dry climate of Southern California is perfect for growing pomegranate trees.

Nutrition is incredibly important if you want to feel energized and increase your lifespan. What people eat not only affects the body but also affects the environment and the future to come. Every year there are more and more cases of obesity, diabetes, malnutrition, high cholesterol, strokes, heart disease, and other diet-related diseases. The chemicals found in the food we eat have a negative effect on us. Sodium Benzoate, a chemical used to preserve food, has been associated with cancer. Sodium Nitrite, used to prevent bacterial growth and maintain the color of meat, has been found to increase the risk of certain cancers. Supermarkets in the United States carry many food items processed with genetically modified material. While the United States maintains genetically modified foods are safe, many experts do not believe this to be true.

Nutritionists agree eating a broad variety of fruits and vegetables has tremendous health benefits, including the maintenance of healthy weight. Pomegranates in particular have the power to thin the blood in the body, allowing your blood to absorb more oxygen, and fight heart disease and prevent arthritis.. Pomegranates also contain high levels of iron that help increase red blood cell production. A great way to practice a healthy lifestyle is to grow your own food and read the ingredients of the food you purchase. One measure of a food's nutritional value is to see if there are more than 20 ingredients that are difficult to pronounce. If so, it is best to set the product back on the shelf. A backyard garden is a great way to control what goes into your body. Planting a backyard garden can be time consuming because of soil preparation, and one has to make sure the soil is suitable for the plant. A backyard garden is sustainable for the earth because the food is not transported across the country, which saves gas and decreases pollution. In addition, the amount of plastic waste created by packaged food is eliminated. Apart from the food we eat, there are drinks that can help maintain a healthy lifestyle. Teas are commonly used for medicinal purposes. Chamomile tea is often used to relax and has been known to improve your sleep cycle and decrease stress. Peppermint tea is said to have antiviral and antioxidant properties and may help with stomach problems. Dandelions have a history of medicinal uses. The roots, flower and leaves, when boiled into a tea, may be used as a detox. and can help strengthen the liver, kidney, and digestive system. Our planet provides us with an abundance of plants, flowers, and herbs which can contribute to a healthier and longer life.
