A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE

SMALL LEARNING COMMUNITIES (SLCs) & MAGNET PROGRAMS

WELCOME TO

WOODROW WILSON

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

HOW THE SLCs AND MAGNET PROGRAMS WORK

WHAT IS IT?

When students first enroll at WHS they are given the option to “choose” their Small Learning Community (SLC) based on their thematic interest. Similar to how large universities are formed by individual colleges, SLCs allow for an avenue for students to learn more about various careers within their thematic classes via a more personalized approach.

The Magnet Programs are Court-Ordered voluntary integration opportunities available to students in grades K-12 living within the LAUSD boundaries. Currently, there are 260 Magnet Programs located throughout the District. All District students, including English Learners, Special Education and Gifted/Talented are encouraged to apply.

WHY AT WILSON HS?

Research continues to show that small schools/small learning communities have the necessary elements to counteract the inherent negative effects of poverty and poor academic achievement for low-income and/or students of color.  Such elements include opportunities for stakeholders to develop their own distinct identity, value, and purpose via

community service learning projects through partnerships with outside agencies where they are also offered various internships and career pathways that will prepare them in a 21st century global society.

HOW WE WORK TOGETHER

Wilson embraces a vision of bringing together academic rigor with enhanced relevance, differentiated instruction, and depth of learning framed within our school cornerstones, IB and AVID.  In this way, Wilson is committed to providing an instructional program which ensures that students develop skills and knowledge for engaging in intellectual work across disciplines/subject matter AND preparation for the global economy of the 21century.  We are committed to succeeding at developing our students in a holistic manner within a framework that is tangible and culturally responsive, hence, our intricate and balanced use of SLCs and Magnet programs.

How It Works

WILSON HIGH SCHOOL'S COMMUNITIES REVOLVE AROUND YOU

With approximately 2,100 students entering WHS any given day, we wanted a way to make your high school experience feel more personal and approachable. As a WHS student, you’ll be assigned to either one of the school’s four Small Learning Communities (SLCs) or two Magnet Programs that have their own traditions, culture, and general education requirements.  We do things a little differently than other high schools, so you'll be free to pursue your interests and passions no matter which SLC or Magnet you attend. This approach gives you the unique opportunity to live and study alongside people with diverse interests, backgrounds and educational paths.
